About the book:
Sam’s Jr. High school is in ruins from a devastating earthquake, and now he is orphaned. He has no choice but to live with his “weird,” prepper grandma in the middle of nowhere. Grams insists Sam has gifts and she wants him to develop them to help the destitute people who soon will “gather” in the mountains with her. Sam cares not to believe anything Grams says about gifts and The Gathering–until he runs away, down into the cities, and discovers how bad the government and life has become. Soon, fleeing to the mountains becomes he and his friends’ only hope of survival. Not only does he fear the back country trails will be unable to lead them to a place of safety, like the one Grams had prepared, but it will be too late for them to leave.
