Excerpt:

MJ obeyed and held out his hand. “Hello, Mr. Harold. I’m Michael Joshua, but you can call me MJ.”

“Nice to meet you, MJ.” Brett’s dad took the boy’s hand, then his gaze landed on Keeley. “This has to be your mother. You have the same beautiful red hair.”

“Yes, sir, and freckles.” MJ pointed to the spots on his face. “I hate freckles.”

Brett’s father chuckled. “Oh, but son, freckles are a sign of beauty.”

MJ scrunched up his nose. “I’m a boy!”

The group laughed.

Keeley stepped forward, holding a book. “I’m Keeley. Nice to meet you.”

“You too.” His dad pointed to the hardback. “What do you have there?”

Keeley held up a Bible storybook. “MJ wanted us to read you a story. Would you like to hear it?”

“Sure would.” He patted the bed. “MJ, crawl up here beside me.”

MJ looked at Brett. “Is that okay, Mr. Brett?”

Brett struggled to keep his emotions intact. This polite boy was stealing his heart. “Sure is.”

MJ climbed onto the bed and stretched out beside Brett’s father. “Ready.”

Brett pulled a chair closer to the duo. “Sit here, Keels.”

She shook her head, handing Brett the book. “MJ wants you to read it.” She patted the back of the chair. “Sit.”

Brett hesitated. Could he do this?

“Come on, Mr. Brett. Read. Now.” MJ snuggled closer to Harold.

His father wrapped his arm around the boy. “Yes, son. Hurry.”

Outnumbered.

Brett sat and opened the book. “Which one?”

“How about Noah?” MJ clapped.

“Okay.” Brett flipped the pages until he found the story.

Keeley leaned over his shoulder. “MJ likes it when I put on a different voice for each character.”

“Are you kidding?” Brett whispered, trepidation sneaking up on him at the thought of entertaining a child.

“Nope. You’ve got this.” Her eyes glistened as a smile danced on her lips.

And caused Brett’s heart to hitch. Don’t do that to me.
