One of the things I love about reading and writing Christian fiction, is being able to see God’s truth woven into the story. Even though the characters and their experiences are fictional, the truth of who God is and how He loves us is very real.

In Scars of the Revolution, my heroine, Libby Caldwell, wrestles with understanding God’s goodness in the face of loss and hardship. Libby is grieving the death of her beloved father, while also facing the siege of her hometown and the worsening fight between the Patriot colonists and the British Army stationed in Boston. Her growing love for one of the British officers further complicates matters, and makes it hard for her to discern what God is doing in her life.

Her questions and struggles reflect much of my own faith journey. When my husband and I lost our first baby just after birth, I spent months trying to reconcile what I thought I knew of God with the tragic loss we had experienced. I wasn’t angry at God, but I was utterly confused as to how to understand His goodness in the midst of something that felt anything but good.

It wasn’t easy, but when I look back now, I see how God led me through my grief into a deeper understand of His character and a stronger reliance upon Him. I can truthfully say, as Libby’s mother does in Scars of the Revolution, that it was “in the hardest times, when God has seemed utterly incomprehensible, that my faith has grown the most.”

If you have ever walked through a painful experience that made you struggle to understand God’s purpose or even doubt His love, I hope that Libby’s journey will inspire your own faith. Or maybe your experience is more like that of my hero, Isaac Harrison, whose life has revolved around duty for so long, that it is hard for him to comprehend a God who freely gives His love and forgiveness, even when we don’t deserve or cannot earn it. I won’t give any spoilers as to how Isaac’s understanding grows and changes, but I hope you’ll be encouraged when you read it.

Libby and Isaac’s story is one of love against all odds, set against the backdrop of the Battle of Bunker Hill and a complex web of espionage. But it is also a story of faith in the God who is able to turn our scars into something beautiful. I pray you will find that truth in the pages of Scars of the Revolution.

My Review:

This was a good book set during the Revolutionary War. I liked how it connected with the previous books with familiar characters. I also liked how in this story we saw the struggle that a soldier might have between duty and falling his heart. I liked how Libby didn’t see Isaac as her enemy but saw him as a fellow human who just had different views. I also liked how she helped him to find his faith again. I also liked that she helped him to see how scars are important to help us become who we are meant to be. I also liked how Isaac trusted Libby and was willing to risk a lot to protect her. I liked how their romance developed through friendship even though they were on opposite sides. I think the author did a great job of taking us back to this time period and making us care for the characters.

My Review:

I enjoyed this story. I have been a fan of this author for a long time so it was fun to read a book by her that was a little different then many of her other ones. I loved the storyline and the characters. I loved how Liam and Liv were able to find ways to save the estate even when the odds were against them. I also loved how they found a way to fight for love and be happy with the imperfect people they are. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

My great-aunt Nadia says that in order to seduce a man successfully, one needs:

The scent of roses (somewhere in the vicinity of the copulation location, I presume);

Fresh-ground cinnamon in the kitchen molcajete (with a pinch of salt if one feels particularly kinky);

And lastly, a pitchfork (stuck right into the black garden dirt).

The Pacifica’s Persian Rose perfume (stolen from my sister Sage) I have sprayed on my barely there cleavage should work, I think, for the rose part. Check.

I couldn’t find any sort of cinnamon besides a jar of already ground cinnamon from Value Vince’s Corner Store, so that’s what went in the molcajete. And since I’m feeling not just particularly kinky, but more like insanely kinky, I went ahead and dumped a tablespoon of salt right on top of it. Check.

The pitchfork was the one task that I couldn’t complete. I literally spent all morning looking for it. I even asked the pigeons to help me look for one-yes, they can help with that sort of thing, as I am, as my family says, the Witch of Criaturas, or Creatures-but nada. I called my sisters, my tía, but everyone had a different place for me to look, and it wasn’t in the garden shed, or leaning next to the side door, or next to Nadia’s flower-potting station on the porch. I finally gave up after two hours of relentless searching with a bird on each shoulder, each one cooing little warm pigeon-songs beside my ears.

Long after Grayson Baker-a twentysomething real estate agent who I’ve gone on exactly four and a half dates with-arrives, long after we’ve made out on my bed, over my new, fancy comforter printed with watercolor woods, and he’s breathless and hard and saying (sort of) sweet things like “Damn, you’re hot” and “Damn, this ass” I’m still wondering where the hell I’d last seen that damn pitchfork.

It’s on the tip of my tongue, the periphery of my memory, and then . . . as Grayson’s mouth hovers over my right nipple, it finally hits me.

“Wait, wait,” I say, gently pushing him back and jumping up off my bed. I grab my fuzzy pink Juicy Couture robe from one of my bedposts. “Just a sec. I’m so sorry. I need to do something super quick.”

“Uh.” Grayson sits back on the bed, looking me over as I tie the robe across my belly super tight with a double knot. The last thing I need is one of the neighbors to see my tits. They already think I’m a little bit-or a lot, rather-nuts as all hell.

After all, it’s not every day that a woman goes into a magical, Rip Van Winkle-esque sleep in the woods for eight whole years.

It’s not every day said woman is awakened by her sister and great-aunt and returns to the Land of the Living-what Nadia calls this realm-telling the town only the truth of where she’d been.

So, naturally, everyone in Cranberry just calls me a liar and wants nothing to do with me except, on occasion, to spy on me so they can spread nasty rumors.

And the last thing I want to hear while I’m shopping at the supermarket this week are whispers about how I kidnapped Grayson and had my way with him, then ran around my yard completely topless while waving a pitchfork around. Hell, by the time that gets through town, they’ll claim I had Grayson’s body dangling on that same pitchfork and then I’ll be literally banned from all two grocery stores in Cranberry. Not to mention arrested.

Grayson clears his throat and stares at me without blinking. “What’s happening right now?”

“I just have to do this one thing. Fast,” I promise.

He tilts his head and furrows his brows. With his pink cheeks and tousled hair from making out, the whole effect makes him look adorable, actually.

I’d spent the last six months on a local dating app, swiping left and left and left, with only the occasional right, chatting with men who, with only a little bit of prodding, were all too enthusiastic about revealing how disgusting and sexist they were. I’d gotten so sick of it that I came to a decision.

Last month I told myself I would go on an actual, real-life date with the first man on the CDS (Cranberry Dating Scene app-terrible, terrible name) who didn’t seem like a psychopath.

And I get it. That probably sounds pretty expected and kind of the way these things inherently go. Going on dates is literally the point of joining dating apps in the first place.

But honestly? Given the way I’m treated in this town? The prospect of getting dressed up and meeting an actual man in person felt like I was walking off the ledge of a cliff with nothing but long trails of misty, blue-gray clouds beneath me.

Willingly falling off a cliff, this time, I mean.

Almost immediately after I promised myself I would actually go on dates rather than chatting with the occasional sexting, Grayson’s profile popped up in my search. Recently divorced, he’d written in his bio. No kids. Looking to have fun as well as deep conversations.

I swiped right and then messaged him with Do you like women who might be considered a bit strange? After only eight minutes, a notification popped up. I love strange women, he’d responded.

His skin was a little bit tan and covered in freckles, his eyes as dark brown as the fur of the sweet deer who like to come to the kitchen windows in the morning to say hello, and his hair was a golden blond and cropped short. He took me to restaurants downtown by the beach, requesting romantic, candlelit tables in the darkest corners, “so we can really get to know each other,” he’d explained, winking. Last date, we kissed by his car, parked so near the ocean, I was distracted by the seagulls the entire time. Their calls sounded like warnings, somehow . . . but when I turned my head toward them after, I saw nothing but the sun being swallowed by the blue watercolor of the sea.

The “deep conversations” he’d promised weren’t exactly deep at all, unless you counted the depth of his capacity to talk about how much he lifts (Two fifty? Three hundred? Somewhere thereabouts).

But overall, he was . . . nice. He never called me The Girl Who Lies, or Freak, or any other unkind name that’s been thrown at me weekly in this town. Grayson was ripped, employed, and, most importantly, not once did he proclaim that he was looking for a tradwife who didn’t mind deep-throating at least twice a day. Which was not even close to the worst thing a man had told me via these apps.

While it’s true, Grayson doesn’t seem super enamored with me . . . it’s not like I’m crazy about him, either. And I don’t consider that a bad thing, to be honest.

Ever since coming back from a years-long supernatural sleep, I’ve felt like a stranger in my own skin. In my own life. I don’t understand the Land of the Living anymore. I was sixteen when I left it, twenty-four when I returned, and twenty-six now. I’ve had two whole years to adjust, and yet everything I do is motivated by a very specific desire to stop feeling like the loneliest woman in the world.

Hence, seducing Grayson literally right now.

Maybe if we have sex, we’ll both become enamored with each other.

And even if not, I’d like to have good sex. I’ve never experienced it before. If nothing else, orgasms sure would relieve some stress. I just need to ensure those orgasms first. Magically speaking.

“Just give me a second,” I tell him, lifting up my pointer finger. “One second.”

Grayson huffs just the slightest bit and then shakes his head. “Are you seriously leaving?”

His tone is more than a little annoyed, which is bothersome. Annoyed men are not good lovers. I don’t know this from experience, but it seems like common sense. Which is why I really need to complete the pitchfork part of this ritual before intercourse occurs.

“I will be right back. I swear. This is important.”

And it is. Rose is for romance. Cinnamon is for heat. And the pitchfork is for orgasms. The pitchfork pins them on your land and all those orgasms find their way to you. Nadia’d laughed at me as I took notes. With the way most men are in bed, mija, you need all the help you can get.

Romance, I can do without. Heat, whatever the hell that refers to, doesn’t seem important. But orgasms are essential to me. I’m not about to have sex for the first time in almost ten years without ensuring my own completion.

For all I know, Grayson will ghost me after this. His annoyance right now certainly isn’t making me think he’s going to become enamored with me after all. At the very least, the universe-the Land of the Living, let’s say-owes me. Preferably in many instances of completion.

My Review:

This series has been an interesting one to read. I have liked how we have a core group of friends from the first book who then find more along the way to help them in their quest. I like how each of the characters are striving to rediscover who God made them to be as they go on their adventure. I also love how unique they each are and how these unique talents and gifts help in the journey.

How could we be at the end of a series? I’ve been having a wonderful time with the Wolfe family and their house full of hounds. The last book is finally Beth’s story. She’s the matriarch of the family who has experienced the loss of a spouse. In this story, she will meet the son she never knew and explore the idea of learning to love again. I feel especially fond of this book because Beth is an older heroine who has some living under her belt. She’s learned how to carry on, with her old dog Arthur, and stand faithfully in the face of adversity. Now that’s a heroine I can root for! I hope you enjoy this final installment of the Security Hounds series!

My Review:

I enjoyed this story. I liked that we got to see Beth find love again. I liked seeing her reconnect with an old flame and seeing how they had both grown since they were young. I also liked the suspense in the story and that things were not always as they appeared to be. I liked how well Beth and Jack worked together and how they would do anything to protect each other. I thought this was a good conclusion to this series.

The best dreams were the ones that came true.

And Magnolia Davenport’s dreams were about to come true. She could feel it in her bones, as old Mrs. Fryman used to say.

She took a step back and scanned the bustling city. Hadn’t she read in a discarded newspaper that Chicago had reached over a million people? Yes, her decision to travel West would be a good one.

The train depot beckoned her, and she entered the stately brick Dearborn Station with its enormous clock tower. Folks hurried in every direction. Hopefully, with twenty-some railroad lines and countless departures, one of those departures would surely lead her to the new life that awaited her.

No one would be the wiser that a twenty-three-year-old woman would be boarding for free.

For what could she do? The two dollars she’d saved would only be for absolute necessities.

The lines to purchase tickets meandered through the building. Mags stood on tiptoe to see the departure signs when she noticed a wealthy couple in front of her in deep conversation.

“I anxiously anticipate seeing our grandchildren again,” the woman, who wore an elegant dress of the latest fashion, said.

“Yes, well, I’m never fond of visiting Horizon, but I know how much it means to you, and it’s been all of two months since we saw the grandchildren.”

“Indeed, Bertram. I miss them the second we board the train for Denver, and this time, having been in Maryland, I miss them all the more. Besides, Horizon is such a lovely place, and the people are so kind. I’ve actually made a few friends there.”

The man named Bertram, in the finest of silk hats, grunted. “Yes, Gladys, we all know you’ve made friends in Horizon.”

The topic that Bertram and Gladys spoke about intrigued Magnolia, and she stepped closer. Horizon sounded like just the place she’d like to live, especially if people were kind. Goodness knows she’d had her share of spiteful and cruel people in Chicago—many of whom were related.

My Review:

I enjoyed this story. I loved being able to revisit Horizon, Idaho and see beloved characters from the previous books. I liked that we got Timothy’s love story in this book and that he found his perfect match. I also liked seeing the struggles that Mags had and how she learned to trust the Lord. I have enjoyed the books by this author and would recommend any of them.

My Review:

I have enjoyed the books I have read by this author. I like her characters and her settings. I liked how in this story both of her main characters struggled with forgiveness, whether it was others or themselves. I liked how once they forgave the were less burdened and were able to move forward in life. I also liked how they were able to open their hearts to love. I also like that these books follow the next generation in each book.

Love in the Castle Library is set in two of my favorite places—one imaginary, and one real. When I started the In the Castle Library series, the main character’s journey in book one (Christmas in the Castle Library) takes her to Lethersby, a small, fictional European country full of tradition, beauty, and charm. I tried to put much of what I love about Europe into this fictional country that I wish existed. From what readers have told me, they wish it was real, too!

Book two, Love in the Castle Library, is also set in the castle in Lethersby, but I decided to make my hero and heroine take a jaunt to Oxford, England—my favorite real country outside of the USA.

I spent a summer in college studying abroad in England, and Oxford was the city that captured my heart. The “city of dreaming spires” is ancient, beautiful, and academic—a heady mix for a nineteen-year-old girl who traveled there for the first time. I even gave a nod to one of Oxford’s most well-known professors through the hero’s name, Jack.*

I had the gift of getting to go back to Oxford with my family over a decade ago, and while I’m aching to go again, including some of my favorite places in Love in the Castle Library helped me to enjoy the city vicariously through my characters. Look for some of my favorite places to eat—including Ben’s Cookiesand the King’s Arms—when the characters visit. And if you ever have the opportunity to make it to Oxford, make the effort to buy one of those cookies (they’re sold by weight!) and enjoy some ice cream at G&D’s…the hero recommends chocolate of any kind (and so do I!).

I hope you love this story as much as I do, and that these tastes of beautiful places, both real and imagined, point your heart to the beauty of Christ that is at the heart of every story I write.

*Jack was C.S. Lewis’s nickname, and he taught at Magdalen College in Oxford from 1925-1954.

My Review:

I loved this story. I loved the sweet romance and I loved the mystery that they were trying to solve. I love how Jack was there for Delphine through everything and showed her what love was. I also loved seeing them both grow stronger in their faith. I also loved how the author revealed some clues about Queen Alma and how everything came together. I also loved that she left it open for another story. I loved the setting and the characters. I thought the story was very sweet and heart warming. I would highly recommend this book and the whole series.

My Review:

I enjoyed this book. I liked seeing Enoch and Mandie fall in love even when they weren’t sure if they could open their hearts up to it. I liked how Enoch grew and learned that it is better to love even when there is the possibility of loss then to never have loved or been loved. I also loved how supportive he was of Mandie. I also loved how brave Mandie was and how she would do anything to protect her child. I look forward to the other books in this series.
